Verse Of The Day : Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord : and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen. 2 Kings 4:1
Thought of The Day : When grace appears, soaring would replace endless scratching.
LISTEN : Today’s devotional is a pathetic story about a poor widow whose husband left a huge financial debt for; and at the verge of losing her two sons as slaves to the creditor, she cried to the servant of God, Prophet Elisha and narrated her ordeals since the demise of her husband who until his death was a prophet who fears God. Her husband left them scratching for survival, but her encounter with the prophet of God changed their lives. God ended their miseries and endless scratching and replaced it with sudden and unspeakable soaring. What does it mean to scratch? In this context it means to gather money or make a living by hard work and especially through irregular means and sacrifice. On the other hand, to soar in this context is to increase rapidly above the usual level. By divine encounter she was not only able to pay her debt, but equally thrived with what was left. The Bible says, “And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for you? tell me, what have you in the house? And she said, your handmaid has not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil. Then he said, Go, borrow you vessels abroad of all your neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. And when you are come in, you shall shut the door upon you and upon your sons, and shall pour out into all those vessels, and you shall set aside that which is full. So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out. And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay your debt, and live you and your children of the rest.” (2 Kings 4:2-7). My dear, her story has some vital lessons for us. 1). We should learn to seek counsel where necessary. 2). We should learn to acknowledge and respect God’s grace upon His servants to enjoy His blessings. 3). Learn to begin where you are and what you have no matter how small. 4). Never hide your progress from God’s servant who has the spiritual oversight over you, etc. Be wise!
